Frequently Asked Questions

What is your current lead time?

My current lead time is 4-6 months, although this can vary depending in the time of year. I will endeavour to complete it sooner if required so please do get in touch. In order to book your slot I will require a 50% deposit payment. Your place is only secured upon receipt of this payment.

How do I choose the best reference photos?

Reference photos need to be close up, preferably taken in natural light so I can clearly see and zoom in on the details.  Avoid taking photos in direct sunlight because they can produce strong shadows and wash out the features.

Remember, the better the reference, the better the drawing/painting will be. Working from a photo where the subject appears small or blurry is like trying to draw or paint someone who’s half way down the road instead of in front of you!

Many of my commissions are memorial portraits so I can work from poorer quality photos, but please understand that your portrait will be slightly less detailed.

A single photo can sometimes be slightly misleading and so to make sure I get a full impression of the subject’s appearance, it’s useful to see a couple of extra photos.

Don’t worry about the background, as I will just ignore this (unless you actively want it to be included).

Can you combine separate photos to create a family/group portrait?

It is always preferable to have the subjects in one clear reference photo but if this is not possible for whatever reason I am often able to combine photos.

To unify these to produce a coherent and convincing image the direction of lighting should come from a similar direction.

Do you provide a framing service?

Yes, all of my standard size completed artwork is presented framed and ready to hang. Larger or non-custom sizes will require professional framing.

The standard minimalist, contemporary frames I use are shown below and are included in the price. The profiles may vary slightly depending on suppliers, but these are typical examples.

Alternatively you could frame the work yourself with off-the-shelf frames (pastel needs to be behind glass) or I can post unframed work directly to your local framer.

Do you offer non-standard size formats?

Yes, I can work to any size or shape you require, however these will be sent out protected but unframed.

What paper and materials do you use?

My commissioned artwork is created using high quality pastel or charcoal on archival, acid free, Clairefontaine Pastelmat card.

Do you offer gift certificates?

My Gift Certificates can be purchased last minute and the recipient can enjoy the whole experience of having a commission drawn for them from start to finish. They have the added advantage of being able to choose their own favourite reference photos. Please contact me for more information.

How much is delivery?

Delivery is a flat rate of £10, and usually sent by UPS. Alternatively you are welcome to collect directly from my home studio in Wimbledon, South West London. Wherever possible, packaging material is reused after ordering my own supplies to help minimise waste.
